We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Stephen “Steve” Penfold, a much-loved member of our refereeing community.
Steve was known for his calm, fair approach on the pitch and his warm, generous spirit off it. He had a gift for communication—never short of an explanation during a match—and was always supportive of younger referees. He truly embodied the values of respect, integrity, and compassion.
Steve’s funeral will be held on Monday 29th September 2025 at 11:40 am at York Crematorium, White Rose Chapel, followed by a gathering at The Woodman Inn, Bishopthorpe from 1:15 pm. A livestream will also be available—details can be found on the tribute site:👉 stephenpenfold.muchloved.com
In his memory, the family requests donations to Dogs Trust or Yorkshire Cat Rescue—two causes close to his heart.
Steve’s legacy will live on in the refereeing community he helped shape. He will be missed, remembered, and honoured by us all.
